What’s with the love affair between Spam and Hawaii? Who knows but we can pinpoint the time the affair began. During World War II when rations were scarce, fate interceded. They met out of necessity: Spam doesn’t need to be refrigerated and Hawaii needed a portable and durable fare. After the war, the love remained. Spam is used in every which way a portable and durable protein can be used. From wrapped in nori seaweed, served with eggs or topped with pineapple, tossed in mac n’cheese, salad or placed in sushi rolls. This everlasting food in a can is dear to every Hawaiian – you can tell by this young lady’s shaka wave approval.
